When Aaron Gold, senior editor and writer for Motor Trend, entered a bet with fellow Motor Trend’s editorial chief Erik Johnson, it resulted in what Gold dubbed Detroit vs. L.A.! The Knock-Down, Drag-Out, Incredibly Dumb Corvette Z06 Scavenger Hunt. His bid to find 10 items in Los Angeles took him from the Valley to Hollywood to Downtown to the West Side, seeking everything from Coney dogs to snow shovels. When it came to finding a “working Pontiac, Plymouth, or Mercury,” he knew exactly where to go: the Zimmerman Automobile Driving Museum.
While his opinion of Carney’s chili dogs might be questionable, his opinion on cars is spot on. To help him cinch a (sort of) win, we pulled out our 1985 Pontiac Trans Am, 1987 Plymouth Gran Fury police car, and 1987 Mercury Colony Park station wagon. A far cry from the Corvette Z06 he showed up in, our Malaise Era beauties still managed to impress.
